Some versions of GarageBand do not have a podcast template and GarageBand does not let you easily create templates. This tutorial will guide you through how to setup a template with two vocal tracks for podcasting that will appear in the start up screen of GarageBand. If you podcast often, having a podcast template will save you time loading vocal tracks and setting up the project each and every time you want to record a podcast.

  1. Open Finder and navigate to Garageband. Go to Finder > Applications > GarageBand. Control click on GarageBand and select Show Package Contents.
  2. Navigate to Contents > Resources > Project Templates > NewProject. Select the Voice template and create a copy. Rename this file to Podcast.
  3. Double click on your new Podcast template to open GarageBand with this template.
  4. Delete all the vocal tracks to create a clean project. This will cause the new track pop-up window to appear.
  5. GarageBand will prompt you to select what type of track you would like to add to the project. Click on the microphone image to select it, then in the Input dropdown menu, select Input 1 + 2.
  6. Untick the checkbox I want to hear my instrument as I play and record and check that My instrument is connected with: is set to USB Microphones. Then click Create.
  7. You have created one audio track but you need to create another one. To do this click on the add icon (+) above the Audio 1 track.
  8. Click on the microphone image to select it, then in the Input dropdown menu, select Input 3 + 4. Also, untick the checkbox I want to hear my instrument as I play and record and check that My instrument is connected with: is set to USB Microphones. Then click Create.
  9. You have now created two audio tracks.
  10. Enable viewing of the Record Enable button by going to the file menu and selecting Track > Track Header > Show Record Enable Button.
  11. You should now be able to see the Record Enable button.
  12. Optional: Adjust the compressor and limiter settings by clicking the Smart Controls button to make the plugins viewable, select Master to bring up the master bus plugins. Adjust the levels as you would like.
  13. In the file menu select File > Save as and save the project over the template project you created earlier (the file menu should open at location Contents > Resources > Project Templates > NewProject).
  14. Now when you open a new project in GarageBand you should see the podcast template in the welcome screen. If you select this template you will have a podcast project with two tracks ready to go for you.
